Today’s #HCSHeroes Spotlight is Sarah Rivkin, a first grade teacher at Brown Academy. Mrs. Rivkin recently received the 2019-2020 UTC Mentor Model Award for working with education students at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

“Sarah Rivkin is one of the most dedicated and committed educators I have known,” said Emily Baker, principal at Brown Academy. “Her ability to effectively train residency teachers and instill in them a commitment to their profession and their students makes Sarah a wonderful mentor.”

Over the years, Mrs. Rivkin has worked closely with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s education program to mentor students who are studying to become teachers. She’s passionate about mentoring, and helping those who stand in a place she once stood.

“Orienting new teachers to the teaching profession is vital to the mission of our school system,” said Mrs. Rivkin. “New teachers need guidance and support in all aspects of our work.”

She adds, “The ultimate goal is to guarantee that these teachers are better equipped to become more effective and confident classroom teachers.”

In addition to mentoring teachers, Mrs. Rivkin says her favorite part of her job is the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of young children. I love the innocence and resilience of my students and the passion they bring into the classroom, especially in these difficult times. My students make me a better teacher. I am gratified and fulfilled when they thrive and succeed.”

The efforts of our teachers and staff are truly heroic, and we are proud to have people like Mrs. Rivkin on our team to support our students!
