Today’s #HCSHeroes Spotlight is Becky Collier, secretary at East Hamilton Middle School. Ms. Collier, who has worked with Hamilton County Schools for the last eighteen years, provides support and care for each member of the East Hamilton Middle School family.
“Ms. Collier is always going out of her way to make sure students, parents and staff are taken care of. I work alongside her in the office and she is the kindest, most caring person,” said Kathy Vazquez, one of Ms. Collier’s colleagues. “She will stop in the middle of anything she is doing if someone needs help. I have only worked with her a few months and she has been so helpful in helping me learn the day to day processes at work as well.”
The ups and downs of the past year have altered the work of our secretaries and office staff workers as well.
“The pandemic has really pulled me out of my comfort zone. A part of my job has always been to direct phone calls and to assist parents but when the schools went to virtual learning, the direction of that help changed. Kathy, our attendance clerk, and I became the front line to help parents/students with Chromebook and Zoom issues. I knew nothing about either of those but every day I learned something new! We did our best to help and every person we talked with was very appreciative, even when we couldn’t help,” says Ms. Collier. “I think, sometimes they just needed someone to listen to their concerns. You also have to keep in mind that in the middle of all this, we moved into our new building which caused all new concerns for parents! Again, just listening to their concerns, relieved those concerns.”
Ms. Collier’s commitment to answering all concerns and questions from parents and students shows her love for her job. Ms. Collier adds, “The very best part of my job is that every day I get to relieve just a little bit of stress from the parents, students, staff and administrators. We are a team at East Hamilton Middle. We do this every day together!”
The efforts of our teachers and staff are truly heroic, and we are proud to have people like Ms. Collier on our team to support our students!
