In partnership with Chattanooga State, Chattanooga Center for Creative Arts (CCA) has created Summer Institutes.
Beginning this summer, students had the opportunity to earn college credit hours through the Early College program at Chatt State. Students at CCA who have completed their sophomore year are eligible to attend several unique courses taught by Chattanooga State instructors, including Introduction to Computer Animation and Introduction to Film and TV Technology.
Freda McCray, a counselor at CCA, said, “This is such a great opportunity for students to make a connection with Chattanooga State and connect to a future pathway in college.”
Students in the film production course created several short scripted and unscripted films. The classes also focused on camera filming basics, scriptwriting, lighting and sound. Students in the Computer animation course were given an in depth look at creating and conceptualizing digital art.
Dr. Chris Willis, the instructor in the film production course, wants to connect more with the high schools and reinforce the opportunities of dual enrollment. “These kids were hungry to get their hands on the equipment and try out some of the things they’ve been learning about.”
These four and a half week courses are free for students thanks to the Tennessee Dual Enrollment Grant, which allows students to take up to 5 courses for college credit at no charge. Both classes operate Monday-Thursday from 9-12.
“This is what I want to do, and I am really excited to advance my knowledge of film production,” Peyton Kramer, an Introduction to Film and TV Technology student, said. ”This class is very hands-on and it’s such an amazing opportunity.”
